Charlie Fower’s Service Station, Macon, MO, 1937.

Charlie Fower’s Service Station, 100 block of Oak Street, looking northwest, 1937.  The station is advertising exclusively Texaco products and has curb-side pumps.  A sticker on the truck’s bumper announces the August 26-29 Macon County Centennial celebration.  Three boys are looking at Charlie’s trained monkey (between the two left-most pumps).  A “Texaco presents Eddie Cantor” banner is on the wall beside the leftmost gasoline pump.  In the 1930s, Texaco sponsored the comedy radio programs Texaco Town and The Eddie Cantor Show both starring Eddie Cantor.  The Jefferson Hotel is at the end of the alley.  The Macon Coca-Cola Bottling Works is on the far right.

Charlie Fower’s Service Station in the 100 block of Oak Street, looking northeast, circa 1930s.  The gas pumps are of a vintage 1920s design.  The west side of Macon Bottling Works and the antenna tower Charlie had built for a broadcast AM radio station he planned to operate are both visible.  It was reported that the radio station’s fully equipped studio was located in an adjacent building to the west of this service station and that the Federal Communications Commission never issued his license as a punitive measure for unlicensed broadcasts.
