Love Lake General Store and Filling Station, Love Lake, Missouri, 1955. The visible gas pump seen is typical of those manufactured from 1918 until the early 1930s. Love Lake was both a lake and an adjacent town five miles south of LaPlata named for James M. Love who founded the town in 1868 and erected the first business facility. J.L. Woods was Love Lake’s first merchant and postmaster. It was a station on the northern division of the Wabash, St. Louis & Pacific Railway and contained one general store (pictured), one harness shop and one blacksmith shop.
